The National Center for Health Statistics research found that 35.7% of American adults are obese. This means that approximately 1 out of every 3 Americans is classified as obese. Bariatric patients have a higher rate of numerous health risks such as gastrointestinal illnesses, cardiovascular disease and respiratory diseases just to name a few. All of these health issues increase an individual’s chances of needing medical treatment.
The obese population have veins that are relatively difficult to see due to a higher mass of adipose tissue. “Research has shown that traditional methods of obtaining vascular access can prove unfruitful in the obese patient population. Choosing the most appropriate device in conjunction with practicing the most effective technique will improve vascular access outcomes for obese patients”. Vein illumination can be very effective in assisting the clinician in finding an adequate vein for venipuncture.
