What is hooding you ask? Hooding is an IV access technique where the catheter leads in entering the vessel as opposed to the needle. This technique is used to possibly reduce the chance of potential puncture of the vessel wall.
It was back when my healthcare system changed over to a new IV catheter that I first realized I had a rather unique method in this “hooding “technique. As people began to use the new device, many had difficulty with their one-finger slide off technique. When I went to assist them and offered the “hooding” method to access the vein, they seemed to have a much higher success rate. That said, I think technique as well as practice can play a significant role in successfully adapting new technology.
