The Australian Red Cross has done a study on the use of vein visualization for blood draw. AccuVein was among the devices they examined in the study. The key results of the study were as follows:
- 53.4% return donors receiving vein visualization technology report that they would be more likely to donate blood if this technology were employed.
- Vein visualization was beneficial in 111 of 356 (31.2%) phlebotomies performed with the technology on returning donors.
- Vein visualization was beneficial in 25 out of 35 phlebotomies (71.4%) when the vein was not visible to the naked eye.
The ARC presented the paper, “An Open-Label Three-Arm Interventional Study Assessing the Effect of Vein Visualization Technology on Donation Return Rate, Donation Reactions, and Anxiety in Donors Aged 18-30 Years” at the recent AABB conference. The paper can be ordered here.
